Planning
Monaco rewards planning. It is small, vertical, formal in the evening and unusually busy in certain weeks. Here is how to approach it.
Quick answer
Two nights is the comfortable minimum for a first visit. Base yourself near Casino Square or the port, use the public lifts rather than fighting the hills, and fix one restaurant booking per evening as the anchor of the day.
Nice Côte d'Azur is the arrival point for nearly everyone. Road transfer is the default; rail is the most predictable when traffic is heavy; helicopter is fastest in good weather. Full comparison in our transfer guide.
Grand Prix and Yacht Show weeks transform the principality: prices rise, roads close and accommodation is committed months ahead. May to early October is the warm season; late autumn and winter are quiet, elegant and considerably better value.
Smart dress is expected in the evening and in the casino. Beachwear is not acceptable away from the beach. Bring one jacket more than you think you need.
