Quick answer
Monaco is small but vertical. Plan around three anchors — Monaco-Ville, Port Hercules and Casino Square — allow lifts and stairs between them, and keep one restaurant booking as the fixed point of the day.
Understand the geography first
Monaco covers roughly two square kilometres, but the height difference between the port and the Rock changes how long everything takes. Public lifts connect most levels and are free to use.
Most first-time visitors underestimate transitions between districts and overestimate how much they can fit into an afternoon.
A workable one-day shape
Morning on the Rock, lunch near the port, afternoon at Casino Square and the boutique district, and an early evening viewpoint before dinner is a reliable structure.
If you are arriving from Nice, build in ninety minutes each way for train or road transfers with contingency.
Dress and access
Smart dress is expected in the casino and in most established restaurants in the evening. Beachwear is not acceptable in the streets of the principality.
